Surf Monster loves to wear surf clothing | UK
Surf Clothing
Why is the UK so boring? Surf clothing fashion is so different all over the world but it seems the UK is very much in the shadows compared to the traditional surfing nations of Australia and the US. Surf clothing has been in the UK for decades but when compared to the rest of the world it is very bland and conservative. So many of the top brands such as Billabong, Quiksilver, Roxy etc have different styles depending where you are in the world.
Everyone loves to wear surf clothing!
For someone like me who loves to wear surf clothing, this is a very frustrating situation as I am fed up missing out on the great stuff elsewhere. I have travelled the world comparing the surf brands and the difference between the continents is remarkable. The clothing in Oz and the USA is much more fashionable, brighter and up to date ‘when will the UK catch up?’ Don’t get me wrong, there are some good designs in the UK, but for the most part it’s dull. Traditionally British people have been conservative and don’t like to stand out from the crowd, but the tides are turning and confidence is growing. I have put the question ‘Why are the designs available to the UK are so limited?’ to some of the biggest surf brands in the world and their answers are vague and unconvincing. They believe that this is what the UK wants and are afraid to get it wrong. If they flood the market with items that don’t sell, they risk the chance of these eventually being sold down the pub. This would then have a knock on affect on the official, licensed shops selling them.
Whilst this is a serious point to consider, I believe they are missing out on a large market. He who dares will win. One of the reasons for this comes down to when and where surf clothing is being worn. It is becoming more and more popular to not only wear surf clothing during the day, but also when socialising at night. Whilst the UK has endless designs to wear during the day, there is a severe lack of designs suitable for bars and clubs. This is not the case in Australia or America. The UK is waking up and it is time the big surf brands did too. Proof of this can be seen in the online surf shops. It is so refreshing to finally see some of the overseas designs coming to the UK and it would seem I am not the only one who wants to see more of it. Some surf shops have been set up for this sole reason alone (http://www.surfmonster.co.uk/about_us.php) and their success will no doubt help to pave the way for more designs. It will take some time for the tides to turn but hopefully the waves will bring finally start to bring some of the brighter, trendier designs over to our shores.
